Hello World (kinda)

This is the first post on my new website. Welcome!

My old site is archived at 2018.prestonrichey.com.

You may notice things look pretty similar. On the surface, that's true! After a few false starts at redesigning my site from scratch, I decided to keep the old design of my site largely unchanged.

Instead, I focused on fixing the things behind the scenes that had given me trouble. Mostly, I wanted to move away from Gatsby, whose static architecture I found to be limiting.

Next.js provides a much more capable backend while retaining the benefits of static generation that I enjoyed with Gatsby. Moreso, I wanted to take the opportunity to start fresh with Tailwind (🥰) and get the benefits of React Server Components for free with the app router.

Eventually I plan on making this site home to my photo portfolio, in addition to my blog. For a few years now I've been quietly putting photos up on Flickr, but I don't love paying for the service, and ultimately I'd like to build a more custom portfolio for myself. I'm not there quite yet, but I'm excited to keep building.

For now, done is better than perfect. I'm happy to have a new site up and running, and I'm excited to start writing again. More soon!
